Cabernet Franc is the signature grape of the Hudson Valley. We recently participated in National Cab Franc Day, December 4, 2016. We submitted samples of our 2014 Cabernet Franc to nine wine bloggers for this event and then participated in a #CabFrancDay Twitter chat with them. Seven bloggers subsequently wrote about their tasting experience. Our goal is to produce the best Cabernet Franc wine in New York State, and the bloggers’ reviews confirm that we are on the right track. As so often happens in farming, the 2016 news was a mixture of good and bad. The bad news was we had no peaches to harvest due to a single night in February – Valentine’s Day, no less – when the temperature dropped to -13 degrees, and all of the peach buds were killed. Additionally, there were two nights of cold temps in April that compromised the apple crop; we lost approximately 40% of the apple crop in those two nights. Sustainability is a popular theme in America and rightfully so. It is a philosophy and regimen all farms need to embrace so that we can assure continuous food production. At Glorie Farm Winery, sustainability boils down to three pieces: environment, social responsibility, and profit. We are serious about the green movement and embrace the concept and implementation of green practices. To conserve energy, in 2008 and again in 2011 we installed solar photovoltaic panels which yield on average 25,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually.
